Practical listing guide
Google Play ASO checklist for indie Android apps
Many indie Android apps have useful features but unclear Google Play listings. Users often decide quickly from the title, short description, and screenshots.
Use this checklist to review the practical clarity of your listing and its conversion signals. It cannot promise rankings, downloads, or revenue.
Work through the page
Review the first impression first.
1. Title checklist
- Does the title make the app category or value clear?
- Is the app name understandable without prior brand awareness?
- Is it concise and free from keyword stuffing?
- Would a new user understand what kind of app this is?
2. Short description checklist
- Does it communicate the main user benefit quickly?
- Does it avoid vague claims?
- Does it explain the outcome, not just the features?
- Does it make sense without reading the long description?
3. Screenshot checklist
- Does the first screenshot explain the core value?
- Are the screenshots readable on mobile?
- Do they communicate benefits, not only UI?
- Is there a logical story across the first three screenshots?
- Are the captions clear and specific?
4. Long description checklist
- Does the opening explain what the app does and who it is for?
- Is the structure easy to scan?
- Are key use cases easy to find?
- Does it avoid generic marketing language?
- Does it support trust and clarity?
5. Reviews and trust signals checklist
- Do reviews reveal objections that the listing should address?
- Are pricing, ads, subscriptions, or limitations explained when relevant?
- Are privacy, safety, or reliability concerns addressed when important?
- Does the listing reduce uncertainty for new users?
6. Conversion clarity checklist
- Is the target user clear?
- Is the main reason to install obvious?
- Are the screenshots, title, and short description aligned?
- Is there a clear difference from similar apps?
- Would a user understand why this app is worth trying?
Keep expectations realistic
What ASO cannot guarantee
ASO cannot guarantee downloads or rankings, and it cannot fix a weak product.
It can improve how clearly a listing communicates value and reduce avoidable confusion for people deciding whether to try the app.
